Mother’s Day

How things change around my house year to year is always amazing to me. This year we have two boys living at home and the house is so quiet all the time. Way too quiet, if you were to ask me.

Yesterday was Aaron’s 27th birthday. WOW! I have a 27 year old child. Where did the time go. It seems like it was just last week I was in labor… on Mother’s day.

Several older sisters in our church always told me to slow down and take time to enjoy the kids. Take in every moment, because in no time at all, they wouldn’t be little anymore. In the moment, when the kids are little, and the house is chaotic with a huge to-do list, cooking, cleaning,  dishes, making beds, the never ending laundry pile, and all the effort it takes just to keep up with little children… it’s hard to think about the future, and how fast time will go by.

Well, this morning I woke up to a text message on my cell phone (bright and early, as the kids forget the time difference). “Happy Mother’s Day mom! I love you!!” Sweet Brandon… then the phone rang, Chris was calling to wish me a wonderful day. Super sweet, but it made me realize just how quickly the kids have grown and how far from home they are.

I’m glad I had my Aunts and the older sisters in the church to advise me about slowing down… in a sense, they were saying stop and smell the roses. I tried to take their advise,  but it’s hard to slow down. After all, that laundry pile turns into a mountain of laundry if we slow down too much.

Well, I’m off, I have teenagers at home, a 27th birthday to celebrate… and a grand baby to love on. I’m a mom… (and a grandma) with so much to be thankful for.

Storm Watch

My best friend called me  yesterday to let me know there was a storm in Andrea’s neighborhood. I tell ya, I was more than a bit worried. Hubby and I said a prayer, then I tried to call the kids. Mitch called back. They were out in the yard along with the rest of the neighbors… Say what? Storm is coming, go to the storm shelter. Noooo. Storm is coming… block party.

I know I raised my kids smarter than this.

The storm passed right over their house. The tornado touched down about a mile away. Andrea has photos of the baseball size hail and the storm storm clouds and tornado on her myspace.

It’s past time for my kids to come home to Washington.

Gossip

When you hear it… gossip… what do you do?

Do you settle in and ask for more details?

Do you stop the person talking… the talebearer, and say something like, “I don’t want to hear anymore”?

If you’ve heard the gossip… have you said a prayer that things will work out? Have you said a prayer for the people involved?

Or…

Have you done your part and spread the gossip even further? Think about it. Even if it’s true… did you tell another person?

Gossip hurts.

Webster

My cousin’s adorable little dog, Webster, died this past week. Webster was such a cute little thing. I don’t know what breed he was, but he was just a cute tiny little thing. In his life he’s faced a challenge or two.

A few years ago, little Webster was out in his back yard, minding his own business. Along comes a coyote, nabs Webster by the nap of his neck and the race was on. My cousin, Kevin, was running and screaming and the coyote was running and shaking Webster as hard as he could. The coyote gave up and let Webster go. Poor little dog was scared half to death, but he was okay.

So a short time later Kevin had the little guy out in the back yard again, but this time he was on a leash. It’s a good thing he was on a leash because down swooped an Eagle…. grabbed Webster in his claws and tried to fly off with the little dog. Kevin was hanging on for all he was worth. You can imagine there was some screaming and major commotion during the whole incident.

I remember the next few times I saw Webster, he was sitting on Kevin’s lap, trembling from head to toe the entire time.

Shortly after I took these photos of Kevin (my cousin - not my hubby) at work, he was in a serious accident. That machine slid down a hill with him inside.  He was hurt pretty bad and was bedfast for awhile. Webster was his constant companion… always at his side. That little dog will be missed.
