Summer Reading

Well it took some time for me to complete an entire book, but I finally finished Summer’s Child by Luanne Rice. It’s my time, not the quality of the writing in the book. I’m busy with kids, gardening, end of school year stuff, etc…

The story was easy to read, and I thought I figured out the whole mystery long before I got the end of the book. When I was near the end of the book I was surprised to find I was right. Generally the mystery books I read aren’t so easy to figure out.

The story revolves around Lily, and her nine year old daughter, Rose. Lily moved to Hawk’s Cove years earlier. She is a strong woman, raising a child with a life threatening, congenital heart condition.  Lily started a woman’s club, The Nanouks, as a support group for the women of Hawk’s Cove.

Marisa moves into town with her nine year old daughter, Jessica. Rose and Jessica are best of friends, but Jessica has a secret she can’t even tell Rose. Marisa and Lily connect almost immediately and a bonding friendship is formed between the two women.

Oh, but there is more to this story, there are lonely, broken hearts, friendships, love, internet scams, and a murder mystery the press just won’t let go of.

I’d read this book again and I would recommend it to others!

Before reading Summer’s Child, I’ve never read anything by Luanne Rice. Her writing is detail oriented. I fell in love with her characters. When she was describing the setting I felt like I was right there with her. I’m sure the town of Hawk’s Cove, Nova Scotia is fictional, but I want to go there!

I just signed myself up for a the Summer 2007 Read-a-Ton of Books reading challenge over at Bubbles In My Head. I’m excited about it! It has been forever since I sat down with a good book. Most of you know I’m a huge JA Jance fan. Well, I have a few of her books on my shelf I haven’t had a chance to read so this is it… I’m taking some time for myself to read.
